Fourteen years after their iconic high school romance captured the hearts of a nation, Cinta and Rangga are brought back together in the highly anticipated sequel, What's Up with Cinta 2 (AADC 2). This Indonesian drama, released in 2016, revisits the beloved characters and explores the lingering questions and unresolved emotions that have shaped their lives since their abrupt separation. Directed by Riri Riza and produced by Miles Films and Legacy Pictures, the film delves into the complexities of adult relationships, personal growth, and the enduring power of first love.
The narrative of What's Up with Cinta 2 opens with a reunion of four close friends: Cinta (Dian Sastrowardoyo), Maura (Titi Kamal), Carmen (Adinia Wirasti), and Milly (Sissy Priscilla). Each woman has navigated her own path since their formative years, bringing a wealth of new experiences to their gathering. Maura is now a wife and mother of several children, while Milly is heavily pregnant, anticipating the arrival of her own child. Cinta, on the cusp of a new chapter, is engaged to Trian (Ario Bayu). Their reunion is also a moment to welcome Carmen, who has recently emerged from a rehabilitation program for drug addiction. In an effort to reconnect and support Carmen, the four friends decide to embark on a getaway to Yogyakarta, leaving their husbands and children behind for a much-needed respite.
Meanwhile, thousands of miles away in the bustling metropolis of New York City, Rangga has established a life for himself, running a coffee shop amidst the urban landscape. His solitary existence is unexpectedly interrupted by the arrival of a young woman who introduces herself as his half-sister, Sukma (Dimi Cindyastira). Sukma carries a significant request: she implores Rangga to return to Indonesia and visit their ailing mother, who now resides in Yogyakarta.
After considerable deliberation, Rangga makes the momentous decision to return to his homeland. His arrival in Yogyakarta sets in motion a series of events that will inevitably lead him back to Cinta. Through a chance encounter, Carmen and Milly stumble upon Rangga in the historic city. Following an extensive discussion, they decide to inform Cinta of Rangga's presence.
Initially hesitant, Cinta eventually agrees to meet Rangga. Her primary motivation is to find closure and understand the unanswered questions that have haunted her for years. Specifically, she seeks an explanation for Rangga's sudden and unexplained disappearance nine years prior, a departure that left her heartbroken and bewildered.
Beyond the central storyline of Cinta and Rangga's rekindled connection, What's Up with Cinta 2 also provides deeper insights into the individual journeys of its characters. The film explores the circumstances that led Carmen to her struggles with addiction, sheds light on the absence of Alya from their group, and reveals the identity of Milly's husband, adding layers of complexity to their shared history.
The ensemble cast, comprised of actors who have remained popular with audiences since the original film, delivers compelling performances. Dian Sastrowardoyo reprises her role as Cinta, now a mature woman working on art projects in Jakarta. Her engagement to Trian, a wealthy young businessman, is a testament to her adult life, but the unexpected sighting of Rangga in Yogyakarta throws her carefully constructed world into disarray. Nicholas Saputra returns as Rangga, whose fourteen years in New York have shaped him into a man who had seemingly moved on from his past. His return is prompted by Sukma's plea, but also by a lingering hope of reconnecting with Cinta.
Titi Kamal portrays Maura, who, despite her maturity and family life, retains her spirited and somewhat flirtatious nature. Married to Christ (Christian Sugiono) and a mother, she remains a steadfast friend to Cinta, Milly, and Carmen. Sissy Priscillia embodies Milly, whose endearing innocence and comedic timing continue to charm audiences. Married to her high school acquaintance, Mamet (Dennis Adhiswara), and expecting a child, Milly, along with Carmen, plays a pivotal role in the discovery of Rangga's whereabouts.
Adinia Wirasti's portrayal of Carmen is poignant, as she navigates the aftermath of a painful marital experience involving infidelity, which led to her struggle with drug addiction. Her friends' unwavering support during her rehabilitation highlights the strength of their bond. Carmen's compassionate nature remains evident in her interactions. Dennis Adhiswara as Mamet, who harbored a crush on Cinta in their youth, is now happily married to Milly and is a devoted husband, particularly attentive to her pregnancy. Ario Bayu takes on the role of Trian, Cinta's fiancé, a successful young entrepreneur from a privileged background. Christian Sugiono appears as Christ, Maura's husband and father to their children. Sarita Thaib plays Rangga's mother, whose desire to see her son again is a driving force behind his return. Dimi Cindyastira as Sukma, Rangga's half-sister, is the catalyst for his journey back to Indonesia. Chase Kuertz as Roberto, Rangga's friend and business partner in New York, encourages him to confront his past and resolve his issues.
What's Up with Cinta 2 is more than just a sequel; it's a reflection on time, change, and the enduring impact of significant relationships. The film, with its runtime of 2 hours and 3 minutes, was released on April 28, 2016, and garnered significant attention, becoming one of Indonesia's highest-grossing films of all time with over 3.6 million viewers. Its critical reception, reflected in its TMDB rating of 6.3, speaks to its ability to resonate with audiences who grew up with the original story, offering them a mature and emotionally resonant continuation of a beloved narrative.
