The extraordinary adventure begins with Steve (Jack Black), a man whose childhood dreams were as vast as the subterranean depths he longed to explore. Growing up in the 1980s, young Steve was captivated by the allure of the mines, a forbidden frontier for children. This early fascination blossomed into an adult obsession, leading him to abandon a mundane existence for the thrill of discovery. His quest led him to an astonishing find: the Orb of Dominance, a cube-shaped artifact of immense power, and the Earth Crystal. When united, these relics unlocked a gateway to the Overworld, a vibrant, cubic realm where imagination reigned supreme. In this fantastical dimension, Steve found solace and purpose, building a home from the very materials the world provided and forging an unbreakable bond with his loyal wolf companion, Dennis.

However, the Overworld's tranquility was shattered when Steve inadvertently stumbled into the Nether, a perilous dimension inhabited by the formidable Piglins. This realm is ruled by the malevolent sorceress Malgosha (Rachel House), a figure whose own artistic aspirations were cruelly extinguished by her father and the Piglin community, twisting her ambition into a dark and vengeful path. Malgosha, driven by a deep-seated resentment and the Piglins' aversion to light, seized the Orb of Dominance. Her sinister plan was to plunge the Overworld into an eternal twilight, a state that would grant her people dominion. In a daring act of defiance, Steve, with Dennis by his side, reclaimed the Orb. To safeguard it from Malgosha's clutches, Steve orchestrated Dennis's escape into the real world, entrusting him with the Orb and Crystal.

The narrative then shifts to the present day, introducing Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa), a former video game champion whose life has become a nostalgic echo of past glories. Operating a store filled with retro memorabilia, Garrett finds himself on the brink of financial ruin and facing eviction. Desperate, he attends a storage auction hosted by his friend Daryl (Jemaine Clement), hoping to acquire an Atari Cosmos console that might offer a lifeline. To his profound disappointment, the auction yields only the Orb and Crystal, a discovery that triggers a public meltdown for the once-celebrated gamer.

Meanwhile, in the quiet town of Chuglass, Idaho, Natalie (Emma Myers) and her younger brother Henry (Sebastian Hansen) are beginning a new chapter following the tragic loss of their mother. Natalie secures a position at the local potato chip factory, managing their social media presence, while Henry navigates the challenges of a new school. His initial days are marked by an unfortunate incident involving a homemade jet pack, a demonstration gone awry due to sabotage by bullies, resulting in the accidental destruction of Chuggy, the town's beloved mascot.

In his panic, Henry reaches out to Garrett, having encountered him earlier at his store. Garrett, adopting the guise of an uncle for a modest fee, brings Henry back to his shop. It is here that they encounter the Orb and Crystal, accompanied by a cautionary note from Steve, warning against the temptation of wealth and foretelling impending danger. Henry, driven by an instinct he doesn't yet understand, places the Orb within the Crystal. This action triggers a powerful gravitational pull, drawing both Henry and Garrett towards the mysterious mines. Simultaneously, Natalie connects with Dawn (Danielle Brooks), the real estate agent who facilitated their move and also runs a mobile petting zoo. Together, Natalie and Dawn track Henry and Garrett to the mines, where Dennis, the loyal wolf, watches from the periphery. The portal to the Overworld reopens, engulfing them all in its otherworldly embrace.

Malgosha and her Piglin forces detect the Orb's return, a development that allows Steve to finally break free from their Nether confinement. The four newcomers are initially awestruck by the Overworld's unique aesthetic, but their wonder is short-lived as the realm plunges into night. They are immediately assailed by a horde of sinister skeletons and zombies. Henry, demonstrating an innate understanding of this new world, quickly devises a strategy to construct a fortress, providing a much-needed vantage point. Steve arrives to aid in their defense, but in the ensuing chaos, Garrett inadvertently shatters the Earth Crystal, severing their only path back home. As dawn breaks, the remaining monsters are consumed by the sun's rays. Steve reveals that a replacement Earth Crystal can be found, but it necessitates a perilous journey to the Woodland Mansion.

Under Steve's guidance, the group embarks on their arduous quest, learning about the Overworld's wonders, including its welcoming villages and the ease of construction. Their progress is interrupted by the arrival of the Piglins, led by the formidable General Chungus. A fierce battle ensues, during which Steve, Garrett, and Henry become separated from Natalie and Dawn. While the men manage to evade the Piglins, Natalie and Dawn forge a strong connection as they fend off attackers, eventually finding Dennis, who guides them back to Steve. Chungus, returning to Malgosha with news of the heroes' escape, is summarily executed, prompting Malgosha to unleash her ultimate creation, the Great Hog, in pursuit of the adventurers.

Steve, Garrett, and Henry seek refuge in a cave, where Garrett's insatiable greed surfaces as he presses Steve for information on Overworld's riches. Steve leads them to the diamond mines, a spectacle that highlights Garrett's avarice and dismay Henry. Their respite is shattered by the arrival of the Great Hog. The trio narrowly escapes in a mine cart, ingeniously using Creepers to their advantage, their explosive power decimating their pursuer.

Meanwhile, in the real world, a villager known as "Nitwit" inadvertently wanders out of the Overworld and is struck by Marlene's (Jennifer Coolidge) car. Marlene, intrigued by the non-verbal Nitwit, invites him to dinner, finding herself unexpectedly drawn to him.

The three heroes eventually reach the Woodland Mansion. While Steve and Garrett create a diversion, Henry endeavors to locate the Earth Crystal. He is confronted by an Enderman, a spectral entity that attempts to thwart his efforts by projecting taunting illusions of Steve, Garrett, and Natalie. Simultaneously, Steve and Garrett engage in a bizarre skirmish with a miniature Frankenstein's monster riding a chicken before making their escape. Henry, using his newfound combat skills, defeats the Enderman, acquiring an Ender Pearl, a mystical item capable of teleportation.

As they attempt to depart, Malgosha and her forces intercept the heroes. She reclaims the Orb, and the Piglins launch a renewed assault. Steve and Henry escape in a hot air balloon, while Garrett bravely stays behind to confront the Piglins. He is seemingly lost when their TNT supply detonates, destroying the bridge. Steve and Henry are blown away and crash.

Steve and Henry awaken to find themselves rescued by Dawn, Natalie, and Dennis. They mourn Garrett's apparent sacrifice before steeling themselves for a final confrontation with Malgosha. The sorceress unleashes the Orb's power, plunging the Overworld into darkness and empowering the monstrous legions.

The heroes rally an army of Iron Golems to face Malgosha and her Piglins. Henry attempts to ascend Malgosha's tower to retrieve the Orb, but she retaliates, sending him plummeting. In a dramatic turn, Garrett reappears, alive and well, riding in on his hot air balloon. Together, the heroes dismantle the tower and reclaim the Orb. The creatures of darkness begin to disintegrate. Malgosha makes two futile attempts to ambush Steve before finally succumbing.

The portal to the real world reopens. As the heroes prepare to depart, Steve expresses his reluctance to leave, feeling he has no place in the real world. Natalie, however, suggests he might have something to offer it. Inspired, Steve chooses to accompany them.

In the epilogue, Steve's narration reveals the heroes' subsequent lives. With Steve's guidance, Garrett revitalizes his store, creating a popular new arcade game. Dawn's petting zoo business flourishes, enhanced by the presence of Overworld creatures. Natalie establishes a self-defense program for children, drawing on her combat experiences. Henry, having repaired his jet pack, enjoys newfound popularity among his peers. The film concludes with a celebratory gathering at Garrett's store, a testament to their shared journey and the enduring power of friendship.
