Jason Kelly, a young lawyer on the cusp of a significant career advancement and a wedding to his boss's daughter, finds his meticulously planned life thrown into delightful chaos. The catalyst for this upheaval is a personal favor requested by his grandfather, Dick. Following the funeral of Jason's grandmother, a somber occasion that brings Jason face-to-face with his uninhibited, marijuana-infused cousin Nick, Dick makes a peculiar request: he asks Jason to drive him to Florida. This proposition is met with apprehension by both Jason and his father, David, who harbor reservations about Dick's intentions. Nevertheless, Jason, despite his reluctance, agrees to accompany his grieving grandfather on this cross-country journey.
The impending nuptials add another layer of pressure to Jason's already strained situation. His fiancée, Meredith, is deeply engrossed in the minutiae of wedding preparations and expresses her displeasure at Jason's sudden departure, which conflicts with their crucial rehearsal dinner. In a gesture that underscores her control, she insists Jason take her rather garish pink automobile for the trip. Upon arriving at Dick's residence to collect him, Jason is met with a shocking scene: his grandfather is in the living room, engaged in an act of solitary pleasure while watching adult films. This disconcerting encounter leaves Jason visibly horrified and sets a peculiar tone for the journey ahead.
As the unlikely duo embarks on their road trip, they stop at a roadside diner. During their meal, Jason attempts to describe his legal profession, painting a picture of a rather mundane existence. While Jason is occupied, Dick briefly steps away from the table. It is at this moment that Shadia, a young woman Jason recognizes from a shared class, notices him. She approaches, intending to strike up a conversation. However, Jason, still somewhat disoriented and perhaps mistaking her for a server, believes she is there to clear their plates. Shadia, along with her companions Lenore and Bradley, seizes the opportunity, takes Jason's payment, and makes a hasty retreat with her friends. Jason, however, manages to intercept Shadia before they can depart. He is struck by a sudden recognition of her. Dick then emerges and, with a playful deception, introduces himself to Lenore as a college professor, a persona that immediately captivates her, as she expresses a strong desire to engage in romantic relations with an academic. A plan is hatched for Dick and Lenore to rendezvous in Daytona Beach, much to the chagrin of both Jason and Shadia, who are less than enthusiastic about this arrangement.
The following day, Jason attempts to engage Dick in a round of golf. During their game, Dick spots two women and, with a mischievous glint in his eye, devises a scheme to impress them. He introduces Jason as his disabled caddy, a ruse that quickly unravels. When Dick's attention is diverted, Jason discreetly informs the women of Dick's recent bereavement, subtly explaining his grandfather's erratic behavior. This revelation prompts the women to depart. Dick, feeling rebuffed, confides in Jason his true motivation for the trip: a desire to indulge in as much uninhibited and unprotected sexual activity as possible before his time runs out. Despite his growing unease, Jason continues to acquiesce to his grandfather's unconventional desires.
Their journey towards Daytona Beach takes an unexpected turn when they encounter Tan Pam, a proprietor of a local store with a decidedly unhinged demeanor, who is also involved in the drug trade. Amidst this peculiar encounter, Jason receives a call from Meredith, who is once again preoccupied with wedding details and frustrated by his absence. Upon reaching the sun-drenched shores of Daytona, Jason and Dick unexpectedly run into Lenore and Shadia, accompanied by their friends Bradley, Cody, and Brah. The atmosphere quickly escalates as Cody and Brah engage in a flamboyant physique competition. Jason and Dick, caught up in the moment, decide to participate. Their performance is nearly triumphant, but Jason, suddenly concerned about the potential repercussions of his actions going viral and jeopardizing his legal career, withdraws. Cody and Brah are declared the victors by default. In a fit of pique, Dick appropriates a t-shirt cannon, loads it with a water bottle, and fires it directly at Cody's face, inflicting a broken nose.
Later, Jason and Dick find themselves at a lively party where Lenore and Shadia are also present. In a turn of events that spirals out of control, Jason inadvertently consumes crack cocaine, leading to a spontaneous and rather embarrassing naked dance to the tune of "Macarena." Outside the party, Bradley finds himself in a precarious situation, being harassed by a group of aggressive individuals. Dick, displaying a surprising ferocity, intervenes, physically confronting and subduing four of the assailants before facing their leader, Tyrone. Dick forces Tyrone to issue a public apology to Bradley.
The following morning, Jason awakens to a disorienting reality: he is nude, severely sunburned, and has a novelty toy affixed to his groin. A swastika of phallic drawings adorns his head. His already chaotic situation is compounded by another call from Meredith, who continues to badger him about wedding matters. A young child approaches Jason, intending to touch the toy, which is misinterpreted by the child's father as an act of molestation. The father intervenes, pushing the child away, just as law enforcement arrives on the scene. Dick, ever the resourceful grandfather, steps in to secure Jason's release from custody.
Seeking a moment of respite and perhaps some wisdom, Jason and Dick pay a visit to Dick's old friend, Stinky, who resides in a retirement community. Stinky, facing a terminal diagnosis with only a month to live, is content with spending his remaining days playing bingo. This encounter with Stinky provides Jason with a profound realization: he begins to understand and empathize with Dick's urgent desire to embrace and savor every remaining moment of his life.
As their journey progresses, Jason finds himself growing closer to Shadia. He adopts the pretense of being a photographer to facilitate their interactions. This developing connection prompts Jason to re-evaluate his relationship with Meredith. Dick, observing this, voices his opinion that Meredith is not the right partner for Jason, suggesting that marrying her would lead to a life of unfulfilled potential, akin to sleepwalking through existence. Meanwhile, Dick cultivates an unexpected camaraderie with Lenore, and even with Tyrone and his associates, who have seemingly put their earlier animosity aside. During a karaoke session, Cody discreetly plants a substantial bag of marijuana in Jason's coat and surreptitiously obtains Dick's driver's license. After Dick takes the stage to perform, Jason and Shadia share a duet.
Subsequently, Cody reveals a significant secret to Lenore and Shadia: Dick is not a professor, but a former Special Forces operative, a fact that had remained unknown to the entire family. Cody also discloses Jason's engagement, forcing Jason to confess his deception to Shadia, who is understandably upset. The situation escalates further when the police arrive to apprehend Jason for the marijuana possession.
Dick once again intervenes to bail Jason out. He then confesses that the primary purpose of their trip was not solely for his own enjoyment, but to encourage Jason to loosen up and break free from the rigid, uptight persona he inherited from his father, whom Dick admits he was not always present for. Angered by this revelation and the unfolding events, Jason decides to return to Atlanta to proceed with his wedding.
At the rehearsal brunch, Jason joins Meredith. During the event, they perform the same song that Jason had previously sung with Shadia. The situation takes a dramatic turn when Dick hacks into the slideshow presentation, replacing the planned images with candid photographs from their trip. These include revealing shots of Jason, a compromising image of him making out with an elderly woman, and a particularly embarrassing picture of him being humped by a dog, alongside a photograph of Shadia. It is at this point that Jason finally breaks his silence, informing Meredith that he cannot go through with the marriage. Meredith retaliates by revealing that she slept with Nick during his absence. Jason, now liberated from his impending nuptials, happily departs the brunch. Outside, he encounters Dick, who informs him that Shadia is currently on a bus bound for a cruise. David, Jason's father, arrives and attempts to dissuade Jason from abandoning his engagement, threatening to jeopardize his legal career. In a bizarre turn of events, David is tasered by Tan Pam, who has inexplicably joined their company.
The trio commandeers a truck in pursuit of the bus carrying Shadia. The bus driver, fearing repercussions from the police who are tailing them, refuses to stop. He suspects Pam of informing on him regarding drugs that Pam had supplied. Dick, in a bold maneuver, accelerates and drives towards the bus, forcing both vehicles to a halt. Jason rushes out, offering a heartfelt apology to Shadia for his dishonesty. With his engagement dissolved, his job prospects uncertain, and potential legal entanglements looming, Jason decides to join Shadia on her cruise. He approaches her, and they share a passionate kiss.
Dick returns home with David and offers a sincere apology for his past shortcomings as a father. Upon returning to his own residence, Dick discovers Lenore waiting for him, wearing his trousers. Despite the revelation of his true identity, Lenore remains intent on a romantic encounter. The two proceed to engage in sexual activity, with Dick employing a series of age-old clichés to maintain Lenore's interest.
In a post-credits scene, Jason is seen standing beside Shadia at a baptism, holding a baby. This infant is revealed to be Dick's newborn son with Lenore, and Jason and Shadia are designated as the godparents. Dick then playfully uses the baby's thumb to poke Jason's posterior.
